Grams Corner
For the Younger Teen

I would like to welcome you to Grams Corner and introduce myself to all of you young ladies. I am Grams; I have four girls all grown with families of their own. People tell me that I do not look old enough to have one grandchild but I have 5 and one arriving sometime in August.

I would like to create an informal atmosphere where you may ask questions if you would like. Don’t be afraid to ask questions I will never think of them as being dumb. We are all at different levels of learning and that is how we learn.

Some of the things covered in this section will be skin care, make-up, and hair care. I would like to start with a topic that most of you may have already covered in your health classes at school. I am a believer that if you understand how something works then you will have a better understanding of why it works that way. So to help you better understand some of the things we will discuss in here I would like to talk a little bit about the "H" word. Hormones.

Hormones do many things with your body. They affect how you feel inside along with what you look like on the outside. Your body's growing on the inside: sometimes your eating habits change, the types of foods you enjoy are different, and emotionally you are moody at certain times of the month. On the outside lots of changes are occurring: hair on your legs and under the arms, needing a bra, your face breaking out... these are just a few of the things happening to you. With all of these Hormones running through your system most young ladies your age feel the need to be all grown up, wanting to wear make-up, nylons, ear rings, high heels, and being eager to date. You really don’t want to grow up too fast because then you won’t have the time to enjoy being a teenager and have those fun things to look forward to.

Next time I will share a little tradition I did with my girls that made them feel like they were growing up and yet still kept their role as a teenager.
